The Empire State building was constructed during the race to create the world’s tallest Structure
When Empire State skyscraper was inaugurated?by President, it was world’s tallest building at that time. In late 1920 New York builders were in a mad dash of constructing the tallest structure in the world. This competition must be most silly of all time but it helps in booming the economy of the city of NY.
Many architects changed their plans when knowing that Empire State will be 10,000 feet tall. For them, it can be the toughest job any architect must have done till that time. The competition was between 40 Wall Street Bank of Manhattan Building and Chrysler building. Chrysler was a luxuriant Art Deco structure planned by Walter Chrysler.
After two years, i.e. in 1929 John J. Raskob with former NY Governer Al Smith proclaimed a master plan about the structure and design of the Empire State Building. Other’s think that this would never be constructed and would face many challenges. Chrysler changed his plans many times and finally he strike with an idea of fixing a stainless spire on the top of his skyscraper.
Chrysler, Raskob, and Smith went to drawing board with an even taller design plan for Empire State Building, earlier it was planned to be 1,048 feet high but it changed to 1,250 feet.
The Empire State Building rise 1,250 feet above the streets of Midtown Manhattan and for the next 40 years, it remained the tallest building of world until World Trade Center constructed in 1970.
Every year lightning struck the Empire State Building more than 100 times
This can be one the most amazing fact about this iconic skyscraper. Lightning strikes the same place repeatedly and more often on tall and pointy structured objects. Dute to this reason, you must have heard many times in news abut Empire State lightening struck.

Empire State building was finished in before estimated time
Well, it took only 20 months from the stat until the end to design, plan, and construct Empire State building. It was eventually finished before its regular schedule and it took 3,400 men each day assembling skeleton of four and a half stories per week. Merely in 410 days known contractors Starrett Brothers and Eken?with the help of their team erect this new skyscraper.
The work was going so fast and accurate that without any changes in planning, first 30 stories were constructed before overall planning of design.
B-25 Bombed Crashed on this building in 1945
During World War, William F. Smith on July 28, 1945, while flying an Army B – 25 bomber?jet, become disoriented and lost in the heavy fog after dodging several skyscrapers, smashed with its pilots into 78 – 79 floor of Empire State building. Striking with more than 200 miles/hour speed, the crash caused a massive explosion which caused debris to fall. This is recognized as one of the tallest building on fire in the history of New York Times.
During this accident, 11 people died and people managed to control the fire within 40 minutes. The accident was known fact in the history but if the accident was serious enough, then it must have caused the whole structure to fall into debris.
The Upper part was constructed keeping in mind of mooring tower for Airships
Mooring tower or Mooring mast is a structure which helps airships for docking. This was the most unexpected and unusual aspect of Empire State 200-foot tower. This was only constructed keeping in mind as the docking port. It proved that high winds at the top make impossible for pilots to negotiate.
